Appendix D — Fighting Fish Mental Health Care Guidelines

inserted 2026

D.1 Purpose

This Appendix gathers the Registry's wellbeing material in one place. The fish part is a joke. The care for people is real.

D.2 Fish Mental Health Check-In

A gentle self-assessment, completed on behalf of the fish, is available at the Fish Mental Health Check-In. Its questions also ask after the owner: whether they have had water, food, rest and daylight, and whether someone is checking on them.

D.3 Observation exercise

A one-minute observation exercise is set out in Fish Mindfulness. Participants may resume being a person when ready.

D.4 Real husbandry basics (not satire)

Bettas generally do best in a heated, filtered tank of at least about 20 litres, kept at roughly 24 to 28 °C, with a lid, regular partial water changes using dechlorinated water, gentle flow, places to rest and hide, and a varied diet of quality betta food fed in small amounts. Fuller guidance is at Real Care. A vet experienced with fish is the right source for anything health-related.

D.5 Reflections at night

See Reflections at Night.

D.6 If you are not okay

Talk to someone you trust, or contact Lifeline on 13 11 14 (Australia, 24 hours). In an emergency call 000.

Parody satire — this appendix is fictional and is not advice, except where marked "not satire".
